Farmer’s Market Finds

This morning we took a stroll through the Mountain View Farmer’s Market and picked up some summer goodies…berries, apricots, artichokes, and vegan pappardelle from Santa Cruz Pasta Factory – which I served for dinner with pesto (see below).

I boiled the pappardelle noodles in salted water to go with homemade spinach walnut pesto from my previous post. To make the pesto a little more creamy, I thawed it in a sauce pan over medium heat, and added about a tablespoon each of whipping cream, olive oil and parmesan. Once the sauce was added to the drained pappardelle noodles, I cooked the mixture over low heat and added more salt. The pasta was served with freshly grated parmesan.

Meat and Potatoes

Dittmer’s Gourmet Meats & Wurst-Haus = local Mountain View gem. Tonight I needed to pick up some meat for dinner and two friends on Facebook recommended Dittmer’s for an old school butcher shop experience. Luckily, it turned out to be exactly what I was looking for: friendly butchers with good advice on dinner pairings, and the lingering aroma of smoked meats (in a good way).

For my inaugural trip, I tried the butter garlic chicken breasts, which produced a delicious gravy to go with mashed potatoes. First I “caramelized” the meat by cooking it over medium heat in a frying pan for a couple of minutes on each side. Then I baked the chicken in its juices for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees (until cooked through).

Danke schoen Dittmers – I’ll be back.

Dinner and Beer for $15

Tied House + $1 Half Pint Night = Cheap Date. Mountain View’s own resident brewery, Tied House (@tiedhouse on Twitter) recently started promoting $1 half pints on Thursdays starting at 8:00 p.m. If that’s not a good enough excuse for a night out, they also have a two-item menu for $10. So even if you’re a complete lush, you can get out the door for under $20. Not too shabby!
