Memories of NOLA

In honor of the upcoming IFBC, I’m retracing our steps through NOLA in 2009, and the delicious meals we shared with our dear foodie friends Johnnie and Melinda.

We started the journey to JazzFest at Bourbon House, indulging in generously sized gulf oysters and Abita Beer.

A short walk from our rental in the Warehouse District, we dined al fresco at Herbsaint and shared lots of laughs. The decor was just as delightful as the food.

Nothing says vacation like endless Mimosas on a Friday morning, which we enjoyed while waiting in line at Mother’s. The cheesy grits and authentic Soul Food ambience were well worth the build up.

Our Friday food crawl continued with l’escargot at Pelican Club, in an alley graced with my favorite NOLA artist, Michalopoulos.

…and a memorable bar-side meal at NOLA, where I indulged in two of my favorite things: champagne and macaroni & cheese. Emeril now shares a special place in my stomach. šŸ˜‰

It was an incredible run of fine local dining, topped off at Cochon and Commander’s Palace. I would return in a heartbeat (after properly training my stomach first)!

Gourmet Street Food

This weekend’s SF Street Food Festival (@streetfoodsf) was proof that gourmet-style “taco trucks” are sweeping the nation. I blame the fried local goodness devoured by Anthony Bourdain for the last 4+ years on “No Reservations,” a propensity for mobile lunches and speedy lunch breaks, and a new breed of foodie entrepreneurs cooking and tweeting in cities across America.

Regardless of the cause, San Francisco is the perfect incubator for this growing trend. I had the pleasure of hitting the “streets” for the SF festival on Saturday with David and friends, and devoured everything I could get my hands on until my stomach couldn’t take it.

Highlights and special thanks go to 4505 Meats for the insane heirloom tomato cheeseburger, Slanted Door for the generously portioned vegetarian bun, Chez Papa Resto for the decadent blue cheese stuffed figs, FoodSpotting for the slick T-shirt and Local Mission Eatery for the killer BLT and hospitality.

I couldn’t resist this pic of Angela with her beloved falafel, but most of the other treats disappeared too quickly to capture on film.

Down with O.P.K?

I’m down with OPK= Other People’s Kitchens. Confession; I haven’t made dinner in almost a week. So I wanted to give a shout out to some of the local kitchens that made us dinner this week…

Tuesday: In-n-Out (enough said).

Wednesday: Sushi at Akasaka in Menlo Park. I had the “Sushi Regular” which consists of a variety of nigiri. David ordered a couple of rolls, but I couldn’t snap a pic before he plowed through the first one. šŸ™‚

Thursday: Half and half at @TiedHouse. While enjoying numerous pints, I feel a little less guilty having a spinach chicken salad and penne marinara at our favorite neighborhood watering hole.

Friday: Maldonado’s Special with white sauce (pizza on Friday? standard).

Where do you go when you can’t make it into the kitchen?

Restau-rant

I can’t stop thinking about the Cappellini Pomodoro I had last night at Ristorante Bella Vita. Perhaps it left an impression because I was surrounded by good company and perfect weather. But the pasta had a perfectly even coating of fresh tomatoes and olive oil. It was flawless.

    Carmel Crawl

Cozy B&Bs + equal ratio of dogs to people + Mediterranean eats = Carmel-by-the-sea. Given its sleepy atmosphere, we decided to shake things up for our Saturday night in Carmel by doing a foodie crawl of sorts through the quaint beach town.

First we stopped for a wine flight at Southern Latitudes Wines, where we enjoyed watching the resident beagle puppies nap in the window seat and play with their chew toys.

Out of the gentle Australian and Chilean wines we tasted, our clear favorites were the D’Arenberg Hermit Crab Marsanne/Viognier and NV Yalumba Antique Tawny Port. The viognier was buttery but light, and smooth on the tongue without the burning sensation of too much alcohol. The tawny port tasted like a swirl of brown sugar, and didn’t have the heavy syrup quality that can weigh down others. We picked up one of each for the road!

Next up, oysters and bubbly at Flaherty’s Oyster Bar & Seafood Grill (translation: sparkling wine for me, and beer for David). We chose to split our half shell dozen between the Chesapeake and British Columbia selections but in the end the Chesapeake oysters were much larger and flavorful.

Since the dominant cuisines in Carmel are Italian, French and seafood, we opted for Carmel Bistro Giovanni to replicate the “steakhouse” experience, as recommended by our friendly host at Briarwood Inn. We tried Giovanni’s own Zinfandel, and fought over my crab ravioli with scallops and champagne cream sauce. David’s choice didn’t meet his expectations, but fortunately I was too stuffed to finish my entree – leaving room for the surprise chocolate cake they treated us to. šŸ˜‰

But the star of the show turned out to be the “Giovanni Insalatina Greca” (greek salad). Beyond the typical flavors of a greek salad (cucumbers, tomatoes, feta, kalamata olives), Giovanni adds dried cranberries (or dates, as listed on the menu). The combination of flavors – in complete balance since all ingredients are chopped to a similar size – was a surprising treat that would be very easy to replicate at home.

All in all, there are plenty of cozy, fireside restaurants to try. In fact, we had brunch at the Cottage Restaurant earlier in the day (they’re open all day for breakfast fanatics) and an afternoon coffee at Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company (the name speaks for itself). And if you have a friendly dog, they will be welcomed with open arms.

    Shout-out

Red Rock Coffee + charitable causes + latte art = locals lovefest. My intrigue with Red Rock started with a killer latte and apricot bar on our inaugural visit to the neighboring coffee shop. Then I noticed their charity work to bring clean water to Ghana, and locals gathering to knit and network and bring their children to play. Plus, they’re open late on weeknights and weekends – making it a haven for open mic nights and after dinner nightcaps. Our weekends now include a post-gym visit for surprisingly rich nonfat lattes (with gorgeous foam swirls that are celebrated as art on the Red Rock blog). And they roast their own, as exclusive carriers of beans from around the world. Did I mention they have sleek design too? If this sounds like a highly caffeinated rant, it just might be: this morning we made their Nayarit Organic Medium Roast from Mexico.

Local wine + local cheese = šŸ™‚ Last night we participated in a delightful wine & cheese pairing at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay. While the imported Alfred Gratien Champagne and Pierre Robert Triple Creme were incredible, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the local producers:

    Dinner and Beer for $15

Tied House + $1 Half Pint Night = Cheap Date. Mountain View’s own resident brewery, Tied House (@tiedhouse on Twitter) recently started promoting $1 half pints on Thursdays starting at 8:00 p.m. If that’s not a good enough excuse for a night out, they also have a two-item menu for $10. So even if you’re a complete lush, you can get out the door for under $20. Not too shabby!
